You, Your Girlfriend & Me Review.

Two's company and three's a crowd... or is it?

Freshly dumped and feeling lost, Glaswegian magazine journalist Kate McArdle is sure she’s sworn off love for good, until she finds an unlikely support system in her new best friends, kind-hearted barista Matt and his picture-perfect girlfriend Paige.

What begins as friendship turns to guilty desire as boundaries are blurred and relationships are put to the ultimate test, forcing each of them to acknowledge feelings they'd attempted to suppress and secrets they'd all have preferred remain hidden.

"Beautiful, perfect and heart-wrenching," You, Your Girlfriend & Me navigates the treacherous waters of fluid sexuality and the constantly shifting landscapes of romantic and platonic twenty-something relationships, while searching for a fresh answer to an age-old question...

What's the meaning of love?

"You, Your Girlfriend & Me" is the debut novel by Scott Bissett, published on August 2, 2024. This novel follows three main characters—Kate, Matt, and Paige—who become entangled in a deeply complex and emotionally charged web of relationships. At its core, the book explores love, personal growth, heartbreak, and the sometimes messy, unpredictable nature of human connections.

I actually really enjoyed this book, it was refreshing and not at all predictable like some other novels in this genre, this one felt raw and real, refusing to follow a conventional path. It was one of those books where you don't just read the story--you experience it along side the characters. Each one of them felt well-developed and written well that I found myself completely invested in their journeys. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, the story took a turn I didn't see coming. The ending, in particular, left me completely shocked in the best way possible.

The choice of the narration suited the novel well, it was written in first person, which we know how it created an immersive experience and helps to see events unfold through the character's perspective. The multiple POV's added an extra layer of depth, allowing us to understand their motivations and personal struggles. This narrative helped it feel more authentic.
A review on Waterstones also praised the book for its compelling exploration of relationships and self-discovery. Kate, in particular was highlighted as relatable and she embarks on a journey of self-exploration following a painful breakup. The dynamics of all three characters captured both the beauty and the true chaos of love, attraction, and emotional entanglement. The inclusion of same-sex relationships, I adored. It was fun to see a different side of how the characters truly felt about each other. Scott's writing style is something to admire. He managed to write an engaging, crisp and emotionally charged novel without ever feeling overdone or info dumped. He made even the smallest interactions feel meaningful, adding to the realism aspect.
Overall, 'You, Your Girlfriend & Me' is an outstanding debut that delivers a refreshing and thought-provoking take on modern love and relationships. It'll stay in your brain with the unpredictability of human emotions. This one is definitely worth reading. I'd have loved some sort of epilogue or a second book to follow on from this, so hopefully the author would take this to ensure there is another book after this for the readers.
