When he is awakened by a ruckus outside, Charles ventures out to find a gargantuan tree sprouting out from his backyard. From the canopy now consuming the sky descends tendrils that envelop living creatures in blood-draining cocoons. Narrowly escaping the clutches of the fleshy vines himself, Charles must find a way to save his family from The Sinew Tree.

TW* Animal death, suicide, graphic violence and gore

I'm impressed, this novelette was only thirty-five pages but you can tell how much effort the author has made to illustrate such compelling imagery in such a small amount of pages and that's definitely something to be proud of.
The novelette starts with an introduction to the main character Charles. To me, he immediately evokes the impression of a narcissist, I'm not sure if this was intentional by the author but it's definitely the feeling I picked up, and I was all here for it. He seethed with anger and an intense desire for recognition and control and appeared to be on a desperate chase for euphoria. The novelette was an impressive experience when it came to setting, I loved the way the author incorporated temperature in his writing, that was my favourite, and the fact that if he turned the heating up even slightly it would jolt the electric bill. This was cleverly interpretated through his writing to evoke a sense of isolation and a chilling atmosphere for the reader creating tension and suspense. There was a lot of content/trigger warnings in this, and you haven't read any of my reviews just yet, then you will know, the more trigger warnings the better especially when it comes to horror, and damn...the author lived up to that.

The Sinew Tree enveloped living things, crushing them in its destructive path, warping and wrapping their vines creating a haunting and unsettling image, I love this as a sense of foreboding was evident and made me unable to put it down and adamant to read more. I was intrigued the whole way through as we watched the MC question his sanity adding a layer of psychological depth, that I never knew I needed.

I can't say much about ruining the plot, but the level of detail and anticipation that was portrayed through this author's writing is impeccable, if you read this, you must be ready for an intense read that is both exciting and a thrilling mix of genres all in one novelette.

I cannot wait to read more of his writing.

Thank you so much to T.E Woodard for giving me a gifted copy of the novelette in exchange for an honest review.
